Casual Unlocks Secrets Of 'Big Head Science' Album — & Why People Are Paying $100 A Copy

BAY AREA, CA –

The concept of “big head science” isn’t really that difficult to comprehend — especially when Hieroglyphics’ Casual explains it. During a recent interview with HipHopDX, the tenured Bay Area MC laid out why he named his latest solo project Big Head Science.
“It has multiple meanings, but the most obvious meaning is the science of getting some big heads,” he tells DX. “Really, it’s economics, but if you say economics people will be like, ‘That sounds boring.’ But if you say big head science, it’s kind of a little bit more intriguing to a young dude trying to figure out how to get his big head. The little bills are called big heads and so, people on the streets refer to them as big heads.”

But here’s where things get deep.
“Let me twist it and tie you into a few things,” he says. “Elijah Muhammad of the Nation of Islam said Yakub was the big head scientist who created the white man. Now, I’m not a black Muslim or anything but we are living under European economic systems and we’re the ones who would want to focus on what that is all about, in order to understand how we’re relegated to the bottom of this caste system economically with opportunities and everything.”
“I’m simply saying, ‘Yo, if they wanted to go there, I could really show the deeper meaning to big head science. Actually, the big had scientists who supposedly did this stuff — this is allegory and stuff I don’t believe in, and I don’t buy into none of this, but I am willing to put my twist on it, so that the meaning for my album can have a double or even triple entendre of meanings. People will see different things when they look into that title.”

Big Head Science, which Casual has already released on his BandCamp page, is currently available to stream for free or fans can pay $100 per copy, which is happening way more frequently than one would expect.
“I’m online selling albums for $100 and people are buying them,” he says with almost a sense of disbelief in his voice. “I’m selling Big Head Science for $100 dollars and people are buying it, and we know historically no other artists has done that, besides Nipsey Hussle.
“Others probably have tried, but no one has reached success from a level where Alchemist bought my album and supported. Everlast [House of Pain] bought it and supported. Lil  B just posted on Twitter to tell all of his followers to go get it and it’s $100. He’s the shit for doing that too. Having that type of support at these late stages in Hip Hop just feels good.”

The digital era has been good to Casual and his Hiero brethren. In addition to their booming online merch store, they’re now able to interact with their fanbase on a whole other level.
“There’s not a real big separator,” he explains. “You really don’t really need a record label like you used to back in the day. And that’s also one of the biggest hurdles to hop over is that I had to relearn how to be a artist that’s productive. Consistency and your production rate means a lot more than it meant back then. Back then, we could put out one album a year. You really can’t do that now. I mean you can, but nowadays things move so fast, you won’t be relevant putting out a album a year.”
While the coronavirus pandemic has brought the music industry to its knees, Casual is using it to his advantage.
“It’s having a positive effect on me,” he says. “I’m not trying to be thematic, but big head science is real for me. We think the economy collapsed and I was like, ‘Great. This is a perfect time for me to unfurl all these new ways I know for independent artists like myself to make money.’ Humbly, I’m not no pushover. My brainchild, I’ve hosted the biggest music festival, at least in the Bay Area, for the last 10 years — Hiero Day.

“The majority of things that we do, we do them without income. So when everybody in Hip Hop took a hit with this quarantine just like every other industry … people lost lots of money and shows and so I’m like, ‘Man, I’m not taking no L. I’m a thinking man and I have time to think now. This is what quarantine has given me. I can take some of these days and figure out a few new stencils to present to Hip Hop in order to show people the new ways to get money in art.”

Youngboy Never Broke Again Gets Pissed Over Fan Breaching Personal Space

Youngboy Never Broke Again Gets Pissed Over Fan Breaching Personal Space

CYPRESS, TX – Youngboy Never Broke Again needs his six feet of space, dog.
In a video that went viral on Thursday (May 7), the Baton Rouge native can be seen reacting in a way that would definitely not be described as happy when a fan approached him in an undisclosed residential neighborhood. According to the fan who recorded the video, the interaction was sparked when someone who appeared to be Youngboy was spotted sitting in a McLaren.
Though the fan started the clip by promising to do the literal exact opposite if he confirmed it was the rapper, he then opted to not only begin a conversation as he approached the expensive vehicle – but did so by informing Youngboy of a fact he just may have already been aware of.
“You’re NBA Youngboy, bro!” the fan said from outside the car.
As Youngboy raised the suicide scissor doors on the whip to exit, the fan nearly lost it with excitement. Unfortunately, he wasn’t met with the same enthusiasm.
“What you doing?” Youngboy emphatically asks someone off-camera as he steps toward the fan. It’s unclear who he was addressing, though viewers of the clip have speculated that it’s likely a member of the rapper’s security team catching heat for not protecting his client.

JAY-Z & Roc Nation Call For Justice In Ahmaud Arbery Case

Jay-Z Pulls Out of Woodstock 50 – Variety

JAY-Z and Team Roc are demanding government officials in Georgia seek justice in the case of Ahmaud Arbery.
In an open letter shared with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Hov along with Alicia Keys, Yo Gotti, Meek Mill, and two of Team Roc’s attorneys, addressed several state officials, including Georgia Governor Brian Kemp.
The group acknowledged that Arbery’s killers, Gregory and Travis McMichael were arrested and charged with murder and aggravated assault in Arbery’s death. However, they see it as a “positive first step” as the move occurred almost two months after Arbery’s death.
Team Roc is urging the state to treat the matter as a hate crime.
“By now, we’ve all seen the crime’s disturbing video, so the facts here are not in doubt,” the letter reads. “He was unarmed and innocent and the victim of a hate crime. Which is why we call upon you today, as official leaders of the Great State of Georgia, and with the entire world watching, to ensure that a fair trial is conducted, as that can only lead to the appropriate felony convictions of both McMichaels. We also implore you to charge William Bryan as an armed accomplice in the crime.”

The letter also desires that District Attorney Tom Durden, also mentioned as one of the letter’s recipients, recuse himself from the case, citing what Team Roc considers a “clear conflict of interest” as Gregory McMichael was a former police officer. The philanthropic justice reform arm of Roc Nation also outlines the connection between Arbery’s killing and the way Black men and women are treated in America.

JAY-Z'S TEAM ROC GETS PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE CASE AGAINST 11-YEAR-OLD DROPPED

“As a society we can no longer pretend that the racial inequities, which exist in every facet of our lives, don’t invariably lead down the path to poverty, violence and death,” the letter reads. To even think about breaking this cycle we need you to protect the process and preserve the fairness of the trial.”
“We truly appreciate that you have arrested and charged these men with Ahmaud’s murder, and are hopeful that a trial and conviction will show that, in the state that gave us Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and has been the site of the best and worst of the Civil Rights movement, Dr. King’s words do ring true: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.”

Arbery, 25, was gunned down by the McMichaels as they attempted to make a citizen’s arrest, believing Arbery had participated in the burglary of a residence. Both men have been denied bond.

John Legend Wants A Piano Instagram Live Battle Against Alicia Keys

John Legend Wants A Piano Instagram Live Battle Against Alicia Keys

John Legend wants to flip the Verzuz concept on Instagram.
In an interview with Power 106 host Nick Cannon on Thursday (May 7), the EGOT winner gave his flowers to Swizz Beatz and Timbaland’s Instagram Live series and revealed what it would take for him to participate.
Cannon suggested Alicia Keys as Legend’s opponent and the “Ordinary People” singer agreed.
“I think that’d probably be the best thing,” he said. “And, honestly, I think we would do it. If we did it, [it would be] like a dueling piano thing … I think we will.”
In previous interviews, Legend has been hesitant to reveal whether he would join in on the viral series, which has hosted matchups such as Teddy Riley and BabyfaceDJ Premier and RZA and Hit-Boy versus Boi-1da.
“What I do love about the way it’s been going so far is we’re seeing producers and writers, more than just artists,” Legend said. “Because the producers and writers, what’s so cool about it, is you didn’t maybe know they produced this song, or know they were behind that.”

He continued, “For us, for me and Alicia, you know it’s our song, ’cause we were the front person on them. We were on the radio singing them. But, for all of these producers, like Teddy [Riley], Babyface and all these other producers you’re like, ‘Oh I didn’t know they were behind that song,’ and that’s really part of the joy and the education of watching Verzuz.
“You’re really learning music history [about] all these hits that you love, and they’re telling you, ‘Oh, I was behind that.'”
Verzuz will have its first two women to participate on Saturday (May 9) when Erykah Badu and Jill Scott take centerstage.

Watch Legend’s conversation with Cannon below.

Erykah Badu Vs. Jill Scott Instagram Live Battle Wasn't A Battle At All...or was it ????

Erykah Badu Vs. Jill Scott Instagram Live Battle Wasn't A Battle At All

Erykah Badu and Jill Scott’s Instagram Live battle got underway on Saturday (May 9) at 7 p.m. EST — but it wasn’t a battle at all.
Instead, it was more like two good friends simply playing their favorite cuts as over 700,000 people watched. Ms. Badu shared a bevy of classics — from “Appletree” and “Next Lifetime” off her 1997 seminal debut Baduizm to “Cleva” from 2000’s Mama’s Gun.
Scott, on the other hand, fired off singles such as “Can’t Wait” from 2015’s Woman and “Watching Me” from 2000’s Who Is Jill Scott?
However, the most mind-blowing moment came when both women shared their various iterations of The Roots’ “You Got Me.”

Unlike the RZA versus DJ Premier and Teddy Riley versus Babyface battles, the battle between the two neo-soul goddesses wasn’t marred by technical difficulties. Rather, Scott sipped a glass of red wine while Badu played Bruce Lee film clips in the background.
Queen Latifah, Ashanti, Ludacris, E-40, Fat Joe, Virgil Abloh, Missy Elliott, Pharoahe Monch, Nas and NBA legend Isaiah Thomas were a few of the many celebrities tuning in and thanking both women for their providing a “relaxing” environment — especially during a week when Uptown Records founder Andre Harrell and Little Richard both passed away.
Badu and Scott both became trending Twitter topics on Saturday night and most fans were struck by the laid back vibe of the entire event.
Check out the reactions below.

Bino Rideaux Recalls The Night He Met Nipsey Hussle Via Casey Veggies

Bino Rideaux Recalls The Night He Met Nipsey Hussle Via Casey Veggies

It’s been a little more than a year since the passing of rapper and community activist, Nipsey Hussle, and the Hip Hop community has made sure to keep his legacy fresh. In Los Angeles, specifically, Bino Rideaux came to know the late All Money In founder as both a cohort and a friend.
The two worked together on songs like “BIA,” “None Of This,” and “Clarity,” the latter of which also featured Dave East. Since Nipsey passed, Bino has done his part to make sure that the Marathon continues with songs like “Of All Things” and his recent single “Pride To The Side.
The first time the two connected came thanks to a FaceTime call that Nipsey made from Casey Veggies’ phone. After Bino got that green light, he went in ready to prove himself in what turned out to be a fateful night.
“The whole drive [to the studio] I was thinking like, I gotta get in there and show out, I gotta make a good first impression,” remembered Bino. “I get there and it’s all blue. It’s a vibe, all the lights is blue. It’s a lot of producers there. Mike & Keys is there, Axel Foley is there, everybody is just kinda chill, there’s white dudes just rolling blunts just back-to-back-to-back, like 20 blunts. Nipsey is just super chill, we’re just talking and he’s playing an instrumental,” he added.
Without much ado, Bino, as well as Nip, let their bars do the talking.
“It’s not a lot of back and forth talking, as much as just vibin’ out, feeling each other out. So, the beat will play and one of us will just jump in. The first song I just kinda sat back and watched and he just jumped in, he didn’t say nothing but when he came out he was like, ‘you hear something?’ I’m not gonna say no, so I jump in the booth and do what I do,” noted Bino. “Literally after that instant, it was just a given that this is what it is. It wasn’t like a crazy thing. He doesn’t force knowledge on you, it just comes off so natural, you just learn a lot from meeting the nigga. I’ll never forget it. That first song that came out of that session was ‘The Field’ and that same night Young Dolph came and finished his verse.”
As no stranger to concrete jungles, Bino has seen firsthand the separation that has led to so many territorial feuds in the inner city. He also saw how Nipsey broke down some of those color lines.
“I know there’s a lot of separation, especially in Los Angeles. Nip was kinda like the glue for that. For instance, I didn’t know Nip at the time but I saw a clip where he ran into ScHoolboy Q in the city. His hood and ScHoolboy Q’s hood are like the worst enemies, so everybody was kinda wondering what’s gonna happen,” said Bino. “Nip showed love. It’s always been love with Nip, like even if I catch wind that he don’t like a nigga in the industry he showed love, it’s always been respect. He always wanted good creative energy. He’ll leave before he be in a situation where he’s gonna disrespect [someone]. His creative process was just always a vibe,” he added.
As fate would have it, Bino Rideaux would become a father around the same time he lost a friend. It was a spark of light at a time muddled in darkness.
“I’m the type to look at the positive. Around the time that dude passed, I had a daughter on the way and so, it was a real bittersweet moment in my life to manage both situations. I just felt like the best thing I could do was just keep going, to change something within myself to improve after that moment. There’s positive in everything and negative in everything so just keep going.”
As Bino embarks upon making new music it was only fitting that it would be his daughter that gave him the drive to take his game to the next level.

When you’re not a parent and you’re in the streets doing whatever you can kinda slack a little bit, but as a parent, you have no room for error. You gotta do it. Artistically I really feel it in the booth. I’m not just in there singing for just me no more. I’m not just singing for the love of music, this is what’s gonna feed my kid,” said Bino. “Now I’m looking at a different tier of rappers as competition. I’m motivated to go beyond my own expectations for my kid.”
In the process of recording new music (Bino said Sixtape 2 with Blxst is coming) the “Bozo” rapper had a chance meeting with a rap OG while meeting with another one of the West Coast’s prized MCs.
“Jay Rock called me one time to come work and we just ended up catching a vibe and just talking for like three hours in the studio. Ty Dolla $ign gave me a lotta game and randomly Project Pat was there. He was real cool. It was random. It just be random shit like that. I didn’t even know he knew who I was. It’s like being in high school and running into niggas that heard about you,” noted Bino. “That’s my dog. We been trying to get [a song together] in, I’m just trying to find the right record for him. He a legend. I got the utmost respect for him. I fuck with Three 6 heavy.”
